Intel, Italy in talks over €4b chip plant

  • Intel (INTC) is in talks with Italy's government to build a multibillion-euro semiconductor plant in the country, even as Germany has emerged as a front-runner for a planned company "megafab" plant, Reuters reports.
  • Intel has eyed building more state-of-the-art capacity in Europe to help avoid future chip supply shortages.
  • And Italy is in discussions with the chipmaker on an investment that would be worth €4 billion to as much as €8 billion depending on Intel 's plans ($4.66 billion-$9.3 billion).
  • Part of that investment would come from public money, and Rome is ready to offer favorable terms on labor and energy costs, Reuters says.
  • A bigger project seems to be headed for Germany, where Dresden has emerged as a leading site for a "megafab" even as France stays in the running. Talks could speed up after a new government is formed in Germany following September elections.
