Annual report 2016 |
Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) is an American multinational company manufacturing cigarette and tobacco. The company’s products are being sold in more than 180 countries across the world. Marlboro is the best selling product of the company.
The company traces its formation to a London tobacconist, Philip Morris, initiating a small shop on London’s Bond Street in 1847, selling tobacco and cigarettes. It was in 1881 that Philip Morris' son, Leopard Morris, founded the "Philip Morris & Company and Grunebaum, Ltd" with Joseph Grunebaum". The name of the company’s was changed to "Philip Morris & Co., Ltd in 1885.
The company is operating from its headquarters based in Lausanne, Switzerland, although its corporate headquarters are located in New York. The company is not operational in the US. Here, the Philip Morris USA is a subsidiary of PMI's previous owner Altria, who owns the Philip Morris brands in the USA.
The company is extremely controversial across the globe because of its tobacco sale. It is because tobacco is addictive and is one of the reasons for preventable death. The company has faced litigation and restrictive legislation from governments.
Due to a global decrease in smoking in the 21st century, the company’s shares have been declined to a lower level and are no longer considered the "safe haven" they used to be once.
