BHP produces first nickel sulfate from Kwinana plant in Australia

  • BHP (BHP) says its Kwinana nickel sulfate plant in Australia has produced its first nickel sulfate crystals, as it seeks to take advantage of demand for battery materials needed for electric vehicles.
  • Nickel sulfate is a key battery chemical and has much higher margins than nickel metal.
  • BHP says the plant will produce 100K metric tons/year of nickel sulfate, enough to make 700K electric vehicle batteries annually.
  • BHP signed a deal with Tesla earlier this year to supply nickel from its Nickel West operations in Western Australia.
