BP endorses Australia as ideal for large-scale green hydrogen

  • BP says it sees the potential for Australia as a commercial scale producer of green hydrogen and green ammonia using renewable energy, but it would require a major investment in port, electricity and water services.
  • This is the result of a feasibility study started last year by BP , backed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, to weigh the technical and financial implications of a fully integrated green hydrogen supply chain, as well as the economic opportunity and how it could be scaled up.
  • BP says the study "confirmed strong demand from potential customers in the hard-to-abate sectors, and for both local and export markets. This has the potential to position Australia as a regional powerhouse of the energy transition."
  • The study examined both a demonstration scale plant and a commercial scale project that could produce 200K metric tons of hydrogen making up to 1M mt of ammonia.
