Boeing at risk of losing a third of 777X orders, SEC filing shows

  • Boeing (NYSE:BA) cuts the backlog for its 777X widebody family to just 191 jets in a 10-K filing, 38% fewer than the firm orders listed on the company's website, as the latest delay to the jet's debut - now planned for late 2023 - gives some customers the right to walk away from sales contracts.
  • Boeing announced a $6.5B charge for the 777X when it reported Q4 earnings last week, and warned in its 10-K filing that cancellations, production cuts and flight-testing risks could cause additional losses, and said the latest delay would leave the plane's debut three years behind its original schedule.
  • The pandemic has crushed demand for twin-aisle aircraft, and orders for widebody jets such as the 777X, Boeing 's 787 Dreamliner and competing Airbus models are expected to be the last to recover from the slump.
