Exxon to invest $3B in to launch new low-carbon solutions unit

  • Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) says it has created a new business - Exxon Mobil Low Carbon Solutions - to commercialize its low-carbon technology portfolio while spending $3B on lower emission energy solutions through 2025.
  • Exxon says the new business initially will focus on carbon capture and storage, while advancing plans for more than 20 new carbon capture and storage opportunities around the world to enable large-scale emission reductions.
  • Exxon says Low Carbon Solutions also will leverage the company's significant experience in the production of hydrogen which, when coupled with CCS, likely will play a critical role in a lower-carbon energy system.
  • The company says it will add other technology focus areas in the future as they mature to commercialization.
  • Recent reports says Exxon is considering adding one or more new directors to its board and take further steps to cut its carbon footprint, as it faces growing pressure from activist investors.
