Metro   The Metro AG, the public under the name Metro Group occurs in a Dusseldorf -based parent company of several wholesale and retail companies. The Metro Group employed 287,929 employees worldwide as of December 2011, of which 110,178 in Germany. With its sales brands it is active in 33 countries so far. Major international competitors are the metro Carrefour and Tesco, on the German market Edeka and Rewe Group.   The first store opened in 1964 in Mulheim/Ruhr in Germany. From the outset, the founder of Metro, Otto Beisheim, decides to have as clients and independent professionals, food retailers, café, hotels, restaurants, artisans, professionals, SMEs and SMIs. It offers specific products in suitable packaging (now up to 30,000 references in food and general merchandise, depending on the site). After Germany, the Belgium and the Netherlands, Metro decided to settle in France. The Metro French first opened its doors in 1971 in Villeneuve-la-Garenne, near Paris. Metro Group is the 4th global distribution group (behind Walmart Stores , Carrefour and Home Depot ) and in Europe (after Carrefour ). It ranks among the top 50 global companies. The Company realized in 2007 a turnover of 64.337 Billion Euros, representing an increase of approximately 10.4% over 2006 . In 2012, the company was opposed to legal use of the term "Metro" by Microsoft to name its new user interface style in Windows 8.     In early September 2007, the Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH. GmbH announced that it has increased its stake to 15.68 percent to 34.24 percent. Simultaneously, the Schmidt family-Ruth Beck has increased its stake to 15.77 percent. Thus, these two shareholders now hold 50.01 percent of the shares. Together with the 18.46 percent held by Otto Beisheim the former shareholders thus 68.47 percent in Metro AG. However, the increase of the shares of the other two former shareholders led to Otto Beisheim, from the existing pool contract exit. Early October 2009, it became known that Otto Beisheim've sold 17 million shares for approximately 600 Million Euros. He has his share of 18.5 percent decreased to about 13 percent. Due to the change of the classification in the DAX important figures of order book volume and market capitalization of the free float, Metro AG is from 24 September 2012 no longer in the DAX , but in the MDAX listed. In February 2013, following shareholder were having 45.78% shareholder groups Haniel and Schmidt-Ruthenbeck,  9.97% Beisheim shareholder and 44.25% Free Float.
